Why people use N-up layouts
N-up packing puts multiple source pages onto each output sheet — fewer pages to print, easier to compare side-by-side, more efficient reading on big screens.
Paper-saving prints
Print 2 pages per sheet instead of 1 — half the paper, 95% of the readability for body-text documents.
Handouts & cheat sheets
4-up grid of slides or reference cards so a single sheet holds an entire deck.
Side-by-side reading
2-up layout lets you read facing pages without flipping. Mimics open-book layout for scanned books.
Receipt batching
Stack receipts 4-up per sheet for quick filing — fewer sheets to scan, faster filing.
Proof previewing
Compare layout proposals 4-up to spot differences. Designers and editors use this for review packages.
Annotation density
When marking up many pages, 4-up keeps everything visible at once — handy for review meetings.
How N-up PDF works
Three steps, no signup, no uploads.
- STEP 1Drop your PDFUp to 100 MB. pdf-lib loads the document tree in your browser.
- STEP 2Pick layout2-up (vertical stack) or 4-up (2×2 grid). Output sheet size matches your source — most uniform-page docs look natural.
- STEP 3Apply & downloadWe embed each source page as a PDFEmbeddedPage and drawPage() it onto the new sheets at the right scale. Resources are reused across sheets so output stays compact.
What makes pdfcraft ai different
- Same engine Chrome usesPDFium is Google's PDF engine — the one that powers Chrome's built-in PDF viewer. We compile it to WebAssembly so it runs in your browser at near-native speed.
- 100% local processingMost free PDF tools upload your file to a server, process it, and stream the result back. We don't. Your file lives in your browser tab and never touches our infrastructure. Verifiable in your browser's Network panel.
- No watermark, no signup, no daily limitConvert 1 PDF or 1,000. We don't gate on volume because there's nothing to gate on — the engine runs on your machine.
- Honest about limitationsWhen something the tool can't do (encrypted PDFs, cross-reference streams), we tell you clearly instead of failing silently. Same for partial results: sampled vs exact, embedded vs not.
- Open standards, free enginesPDFium is BSD/Apache licensed (free for any use). We don't pay vendor license fees and pass that savings on to you (and to ourselves) as a free, ad-supported tool with no upgrade-to-pro pressure.
Frequently asked questions
Will the output be smaller than the input?
Often, yes — fewer total pages plus shared resources. Not always; if your source has heavy per-page imagery, the embed overhead can offset savings.
Are the source pages scaled?
Yes. Each source page is scaled to fit its cell while preserving aspect ratio. Cells get a small gap (8 pt default) so they don’t collide visually.
What if pages have mixed orientations?
Output sheet size matches the FIRST source page. Mixed-orientation docs may have some cells rotated awkwardly. For best results, normalize orientation first via Rotate PDF.
Is anything uploaded?
No. pdf-lib runs in your browser.
Can I do 6-up or 8-up?
Not in v1 — 2-up and 4-up cover the vast majority of use cases. Higher counts get illegible quickly anyway.
Want to resize before N-up?
Resize PDF normalizes page sizes first — handy when your source mixes Letter and A4.
