Why people resize PDFs

Standardizing page size is a frequent prep step. Submission portals expect Letter or A4. Print shops want consistent sheet sizes. International teams need to convert between US and metric paper.

US ↔ metric conversion
Convert Letter (US) to A4 (international) so the doc opens cleanly anywhere — or vice versa.
Print-shop standardization
Print shops batch jobs by sheet size. Resize all pages to one target before submitting.
Submission portals
Many gov / academic portals reject PDFs with non-standard page sizes. Resize to the required size first.
Cross-doc consistency
When merging PDFs from multiple sources, resizing to a common size makes the merged result look uniform.
Mobile-friendly resize
Down-resize a Legal PDF to A5 for tighter mobile display.
Pre-archiving normalization
Archives often require uniform page size. Resize before depositing into long-term storage.

How Resize PDF works

Three steps, no signup, no uploads.

  1. STEP 1
    Drop your PDF
Up to 100 MB. pdf-lib loads it in your browser.
  2. STEP 2
    Pick target size + orientation
Letter, Legal, A4, A3, or A5. Optional landscape toggle. We compute the largest scale that keeps the source within the target.
  3. STEP 3
    Apply & download
Each source page is embedded and drawn on a new target-sized page, centered, with margins where the aspect ratios differ.

What makes pdfcraft ai different

  • Same engine Chrome uses
PDFium is Google's PDF engine — the one that powers Chrome's built-in PDF viewer. We compile it to WebAssembly so it runs in your browser at near-native speed.
  • 100% local processing
Most free PDF tools upload your file to a server, process it, and stream the result back. We don't. Your file lives in your browser tab and never touches our infrastructure. Verifiable in your browser's Network panel.
  • No watermark, no signup, no daily limit
Convert 1 PDF or 1,000. We don't gate on volume because there's nothing to gate on — the engine runs on your machine.
  • Honest about limitations
When something the tool can't do (encrypted PDFs, cross-reference streams), we tell you clearly instead of failing silently. Same for partial results: sampled vs exact, embedded vs not.
  • Open standards, free engines
PDFium is BSD/Apache licensed (free for any use). We don't pay vendor license fees and pass that savings on to you (and to ourselves) as a free, ad-supported tool with no upgrade-to-pro pressure.

Frequently asked questions

Does this preserve content quality?
Yes. Embedding-and-drawing is a reference operation — the source content stream is preserved, just placed on a larger or smaller stage. No rasterization, no quality loss.
Why are there margins around the content?
Aspect-ratio mismatch. A 3:4 source on a 4:3 target leaves margins on the sides. We center the content; the margins are filled with white.
Can I resize to custom dimensions?
Not in v1 — 5 standard sizes cover the vast majority of needs. Custom is a future extension.
Will resizing change file size?
Roughly the same. Resource reuse via embedPdf keeps overhead minimal.
Is anything uploaded?
No. pdf-lib runs in your browser.

Just want to crop instead?

Crop PDF removes content margins without scaling. Different operation — useful when the page is the right size but the content area is too wide.
