Why people use Make PDF Searchable

Scanned PDFs look like text but are images — Ctrl-F doesn’t work, copy-paste returns nothing. Make PDF Searchable runs OCR on each page and overlays the recognized text invisibly so the original visual layout is preserved AND text search / copy-paste both work. Different from AI OCR (which extracts text as a separate output) — this updates the PDF in place.

Legacy document archive search
Old scanned legal / corporate / academic archives become searchable. Useful when you have years of PDF accumulation and need to find a specific clause / paragraph / name across the archive.
Compliance / audit trail
Compliance archives (KYC, AML, regulatory filings) often arrive as scans. Making them searchable is a prerequisite for any audit involving full-text search of the archive.
Research lit-review reading list
Older research papers (pre-digital era, photocopied / scanned) need OCR before you can highlight, copy-paste, or text-search. The searchable version preserves the original layout but unlocks all the modern text affordances.
Academic / institutional digitization
Universities digitizing thesis archives, libraries digitizing rare-book collections. Making the scans searchable is the difference between “digital archive” and “searchable digital archive.”
Personal document organization
Receipts, contracts, certificates, lab reports accumulated as scans become searchable across your file archive. Pairs with cloud-storage search (Google Drive, Dropbox) for one-search-finds-everything across years of saved docs.

How Make PDF Searchable works

Three steps. Sign in to run, zero retention — files never persisted on our servers.

  1. STEP 1
    Drop the scanned PDF
PDF up to 50 pages. Scanned and image-based PDFs are the target; clean digital PDFs already have searchable text (no need to run this).
  2. STEP 2
    We OCR + overlay
AI Vision model OCRs each page (handles handwriting, multilingual scripts, low-resolution scans better than legacy Tesseract). Recognized text overlaid invisibly behind the original image so visual layout stays unchanged.
  3. STEP 3
    Download the searchable PDF
Output is a PDF that LOOKS identical to the source (same layout, same images) but Ctrl-F finds matches and copy-paste returns the recognized text. Drop into your document management system and search across the archive.

What makes pdfcraft ai different

  • Citations on every claim
Every AI summary, answer, and translation links back to the page it came from. You can verify the source before relying on the output. Hallucination is bounded, not blind.
  • Pay only for what you use
No subscription. Purchased credits never expire. Cancel anytime. Cost shown before you run — exact credit amount appears after upload.
  • Multi-provider routing, no vendor lock-in
We balance multiple AI providers per call to optimise cost and quality. If one has an outage, the next call automatically tries another. You're not bound to a single vendor's pricing or downtime.
  • Zero retention by design
Your PDF lives in memory only as long as the AI call needs it, then it's discarded — nothing is persisted to our servers. We don't fine-tune models on your data. Verifiable in your dashboard's audit log.
  • Honest about model limits
When a doc exceeds the model's context window we surface that the output was truncated (we render result.wasTruncated in every AI tool's UI). When a number can't be verified from the source we flag it. No silent failures.

Frequently asked questions

How is this different from AI PDF OCR?
AI OCR returns the recognized text as markdown / plaintext output (separate from the PDF). Make PDF Searchable returns the same PDF with text invisibly overlaid — the visual stays exactly the same, but you can search and copy. Pick OCR when you want the text; pick Searchable when you want the searchable PDF.
Will it work for handwritten content?
Handles handwriting better than legacy OCR (we use AI Vision, not Tesseract). Quality depends on handwriting clarity and DPI — readable handwriting works; messy or low-resolution handwriting degrades. For low-confidence pages, the search results may have OCR errors — verify against the visual when accuracy matters.
What about multilingual content?
Strong on Latin scripts (English, Spanish, French, Portuguese). Indian-language support (Devanagari, Tamil, Telugu, Bengali) works well for printed text; handwritten Indic is harder. Multi-script pages (English + Hindi mixed) handled.
Is the original layout preserved?
Yes — explicitly. The original page image is unchanged; recognized text is overlaid in a transparent layer. Visual identity preserved; text functionality added.
What’s the credit cost?
2 credits per page. So a 20-page scanned doc costs 40 credits. Cost is page-based because OCR work scales with page count.
What’s the page limit?
50 pages per call. For longer archives, split first via Split PDF (free), make each chunk searchable, then merge back via Merge PDF (free).

Just need the text without the searchable PDF?

AI PDF OCR returns recognized text as markdown / plaintext — cheaper if you only need the text and don’t need to keep the visual layout.
