Why people use AI Redact

Redact PDF (free) gives you a click-and-drag tool to manually black out content. AI Redact does the auto-detection part — surfaces likely PII (names, emails, phones, SSNs, credit-card numbers, addresses) so the human review pass is faster. Together they make a sane redaction workflow: AI proposes, human verifies.

HR document sharing
Employee personnel file gets requested for a transfer. Auto-redact detects names, social-security numbers, salary figures, home addresses; HR reviews + ships. Cuts the manual-redaction tax 5–10×.
Legal discovery (sanitize before production)
Producing 10,000 pages? Auto-redact the obvious PII first (SSNs, credit-card numbers, kids’ names), then human review verifies. Privilege review still needs a lawyer; PII redaction is the layer below that.
Customer-support log sharing
Sharing a debug session with engineering or a vendor — but the logs include user emails, IPs, and user-id strings. Auto-redact catches them; review + ship the sanitized version.
Research paper anonymization
Submitting a case study or qualitative-research paper for blind peer review. Auto-redact catches respondent names, organization names, geographic identifiers — anything that would compromise blindness.
Press release / public posting prep
Sharing a customer success story or case study externally? Auto-redact internal employee names, internal project codenames, customer-specific personal details. Faster than manual scrubbing of a 20-page case study.

How AI Redact works

Three steps. Sign in to run, zero retention — files never persisted on our servers.

  1. STEP 1
    Drop your PDF
Up to 100 MB. Works best on text-bearing PDFs (run AI OCR first for image-only).
  2. STEP 2
    We detect PII candidates
The prompt is tuned to flag classes of PII: names (proper nouns identified as people), email addresses, phone numbers, postal addresses, SSN-shaped strings, credit-card-shaped strings, IBAN-shaped strings, dates of birth. Each candidate is returned with confidence + page + bounding-box hint.
  3. STEP 3
    Review + apply
Output is a JSON list of candidates. The in-tool review UI lets you accept/reject each one, then applies the accepted redactions via the Redact PDF rendering pipeline. Final output is a redacted PDF — recipients can’t recover the redacted content (it’s baked into raster, not just visually overlaid).

What makes pdfcraft ai different

  • Citations on every claim
Every AI summary, answer, and translation links back to the page it came from. You can verify the source before relying on the output. Hallucination is bounded, not blind.
  • Pay only for what you use
No subscription. Purchased credits never expire. Cancel anytime. Cost shown before you run — exact credit amount appears after upload.
  • Multi-provider routing, no vendor lock-in
We balance multiple AI providers per call to optimise cost and quality. If one has an outage, the next call automatically tries another. You're not bound to a single vendor's pricing or downtime.
  • Zero retention by design
Your PDF lives in memory only as long as the AI call needs it, then it's discarded — nothing is persisted to our servers. We don't fine-tune models on your data. Verifiable in your dashboard's audit log.
  • Honest about model limits
When a doc exceeds the model's context window we surface that the output was truncated (we render result.wasTruncated in every AI tool's UI). When a number can't be verified from the source we flag it. No silent failures.

Frequently asked questions

Is this a substitute for manual review?
No — it’s a force-multiplier for it. AI catches the obvious patterns (90%+ recall on emails, phones, SSNs); humans catch the context-dependent ones (“the partner” in a discovery doc that the AI can’t connect to a specific person). For high-stakes redaction (legal production, regulatory filings, classified material), human review is mandatory; AI Redact reduces the manual tax, doesn’t eliminate it.
What about contextual / domain-specific PII?
Less reliable. Standard formats (SSN xxx-xx-xxxx, email user@domain.tld) get caught by pattern. Contextual identifiers — “the patient born in 1957 in Cincinnati” — require domain understanding. The tool flags such candidates with low confidence; reviewer should treat HIPAA/GDPR-grade redaction as needing dedicated tooling beyond AI Redact.
Are the redactions actually permanent?
Yes. Output PDF has the redacted regions baked in as raster — recipients can’t copy-paste the underlying text or extract it via PDF tooling. Verify by opening the output and trying to select the redacted text — you should get nothing.
What's the credit cost?
8 credits per pass (more than Summarize because the pass requires per-page coordinate detection).
Can I run it on confidential documents?
The PDF is sent to the inference provider. For maximum privacy, do a manual first-pass redaction in Redact PDF (in-browser, no upload) for the sensitive portions, then run AI Redact on the partially-sanitized version to catch anything else.
How is this different from manual Redact PDF?
Manual Redact PDF (free, in-browser) gives you the click-and-drag tool to black out specific regions. AI Redact (paid, server-side) is the auto-detection layer that proposes WHAT to redact. Use them together: AI proposes → human verifies → manual tool applies the final selections.

Want manual control?

Redact PDF (free) is the click-and-drag tool — runs in your browser, no upload, no AI. Use for sensitive documents where you want full manual control or need to skip the inference-provider round-trip.
