How to remove hidden metadata from a PDF before publishing

Strip author names, software tags, and edit history before a document goes public.

For: Journalists, researchers, and anyone publishing a PDF who doesn't want hidden data attached
STEP BY STEP

The workflow

1
See what's actually in the file
Open PDF Inspector to view the document's metadata — author, creator software, creation and modification dates, and embedded properties you may not know are there.
Open PDF Inspector
2
Strip the metadata
Run Remove Metadata to clear the author, title, keywords, and producer fields so the published file carries no identifying trail.
Open Remove PDF Metadata
3
Flatten to drop layered data (optional)
If the PDF has form fields, annotations, or layers, flatten it so nothing interactive or hidden survives in the public copy.
Open Flatten PDF Forms
WHY IT MATTERS

The case for doing this

PDFs quietly carry more than their visible text: the author's real name, the organisation's software, timestamps, and sometimes earlier wording inside annotations or form fields. Publish without checking and you can leak who wrote a document or when — which matters for a source's safety, a blind peer review, or a confidential bid. PDF Inspector shows you exactly what's embedded, Remove Metadata clears the document properties, and Flatten removes the layered or interactive remnants. All three run in your browser, so the file never touches a server while you clean it. Metadata removal is a deliberate step — saving a file usually preserves (or even adds) metadata rather than stripping it.

COMMON MISTAKES

What to avoid

Assuming 'Save As' strips metadata
Most editors preserve or even add metadata on save. Removing it is a deliberate action, not a side effect of saving.
Forgetting annotations and form fields
Metadata isn't only the document properties — comments and form data can carry names too. Flatten if the file has any.
Confusing metadata with visible content
Removing metadata doesn't hide sensitive text in the body. If you need to obscure content on the page, redact it as a separate step.
TIPS FOR THE BEST RESULTS

What works

Inspect before AND after
Re-open PDF Inspector on the cleaned file to confirm the fields are actually empty before you publish.
Keep an internal master
Strip a copy for publication and keep the original, with its metadata, for your own records.
