How to extract images from a PDF

Pull every photo, chart, and figure out of a PDF as separate image files.

For: Designers, content teams, and students reusing figures, photos, or charts from a PDF
STEP BY STEP

The workflow

1
Extract the embedded images
Open Extract Images and drop in the PDF. It pulls out the embedded raster images — photos, scanned figures, logos — as individual files you can download.

2
Or render whole pages as images
If what you want is a chart drawn with vectors rather than a stored photo, render the page itself with PDF to PNG to capture exactly what's shown.

WHY IT MATTERS

The case for doing this

Reusing a figure from a report, grabbing a photo from a brochure, lifting a chart for a slide — copy-and-paste out of a PDF viewer is lossy and fiddly. Extract Images lifts the original embedded assets at the resolution they were stored, so you get the real picture, not a screenshot of it. For graphics that aren't stored as images — many charts and logos are vectors — rendering the page to PNG captures the visual instead. Both run locally, so a proprietary deck or report stays on your device. One caveat that isn't technical: extracting an image doesn't grant you the right to republish it — check the source's licence before reusing someone else's work.

COMMON MISTAKES

What to avoid

Embedded image vs. rendered page
A chart drawn with vectors isn't an 'image' inside the file, so Extract Images won't find it. Use PDF to PNG to capture the page as it looks.
Expecting editable graphics
Extracted images are flat rasters, not editable vectors. You can't re-colour a chart this way — you get the picture as it was stored.
Reuse rights
Pulling an image out doesn't give you permission to republish it. Check the source's licence before reusing someone else's figure.
TIPS FOR THE BEST RESULTS

What works

Resolution comes from the source
Extracted images are only as sharp as they were stored. For a crisp result from a vector page, render at a higher DPI with PDF to PNG.
Batch a whole report in one pass
Extract Images handles a multi-page PDF at once — you don't have to go page by page.
FAQ

Questions about this workflow

It extracts the embedded raster images. Vector graphics (many charts and logos) aren't stored as images — render those pages with PDF to PNG instead.
