Why people strip PDF metadata

PDFs leak surprising amounts of identity info. Author = your OS username. Producer = your software fingerprint. ProductionDate / ModDate = exact timestamps. XMP can hold full revision history. Strip before sending externally.

External sharing
Before emailing a PDF outside your org, strip the OS username and corporate-software signatures.
Whistleblower / journalism
Anonymous tips need their tracks cleaned — metadata can de-anonymize a leaker.
Pre-FOIA release
Government docs released under FOIA must have authoring metadata stripped per agency policy.
Academic anonymization
Double-blind submission policies require author info removed not just from the body but from the metadata too.
Resume privacy
Resumes uploaded to job boards leak metadata. Strip before upload.
Pipeline normalization
Document-archive ingestion pipelines often want clean metadata — fewer surprises in downstream search and indexing.

How Remove PDF Metadata works

Three steps, no signup, no uploads.

  1. STEP 1
    Drop your PDF
    Up to 100 MB.
  2. STEP 2
    Click Remove metadata
We clear /Info dict fields (Title, Author, Subject, Keywords, Producer, Creator, dates) and remove the embedded XMP metadata stream.
  3. STEP 3
    Download
Saved with object streams; the document looks identical visually but the metadata fingerprint is gone.

What makes pdfcraft ai different

  • Same engine Chrome uses
PDFium is Google's PDF engine — the one that powers Chrome's built-in PDF viewer. We compile it to WebAssembly so it runs in your browser at near-native speed.
  • 100% local processing
Most free PDF tools upload your file to a server, process it, and stream the result back. We don't. Your file lives in your browser tab and never touches our infrastructure. Verifiable in your browser's Network panel.
  • No watermark, no signup, no daily limit
Convert 1 PDF or 1,000. We don't gate on volume because there's nothing to gate on — the engine runs on your machine.
  • Honest about limitations
When something the tool can't do (encrypted PDFs, cross-reference streams), we tell you clearly instead of failing silently. Same for partial results: sampled vs exact, embedded vs not.
  • Open standards, free engines
PDFium is BSD/Apache licensed (free for any use). We don't pay vendor license fees and pass that savings on to you (and to ourselves) as a free, ad-supported tool with no upgrade-to-pro pressure.

Frequently asked questions

Is this destructive to page content?
No. Only metadata is removed. Page text, images, layout, fonts — all preserved exactly.
Can the metadata be recovered?
Not from the saved file — once the /Info dict and XMP stream are gone, they’re gone. (Anyone with the original PDF still has the original metadata, of course.)
Does this remove form data?
No. Form field values are part of the document content, not metadata. Use Flatten PDF Forms if you want to bake those in too.
Will the file size change?
Slightly smaller. Metadata is usually a few KB.
Is anything uploaded?
No. pdf-lib runs in your browser.
What about hidden text or invisible layers?
Out of scope — those live in the page content, not metadata. A separate redaction tool would handle that.

Want to inspect first?

PDF Inspector shows you exactly what metadata is in the file. Run it before stripping so you know what’s being removed.
