Why people list PDF attachments

PDFs can secretly carry embedded files — datasets, source documents, working notes. For compliance audits and security review, knowing what's hidden inside matters.

Security review
Embedded executables, macros, or unexpected file types in a PDF can be a security concern. List the attachments to confirm what's actually there.
Compliance audit
Regulatory filings often include supporting docs. Auditors need to confirm the exact set of attachments matches the submission spec.
Research artefacts
Technical reports often embed datasets, scripts, or supplementary material. Listing the attachments is the first step to retrieving them.
PDF/A validation
PDF/A archive standards restrict embedded file types. Listing attachments helps validators confirm compliance before submission to repositories.
Document deconstruction
Designers checking what assets are bundled into a PDF deliverable — fonts, source files, working layers — that they need to manage separately.

How PDF Attachments Lister works

Three steps, no signup, no uploads.

  1. STEP 1
    Drop your PDF
Up to 100 MB. Byte parser walks the /Names tree in your browser.
  2. STEP 2
    Click List attachments
We surface every Filespec dict from /EmbeddedFiles — Unicode filenames preferred, MIME types decoded.
  3. STEP 3
    Copy or export
Copy as text (filename + size + description), or export as JSON.

What makes pdfcraft ai different

  • Same engine Chrome uses
PDFium is Google's PDF engine — the one that powers Chrome's built-in PDF viewer. We compile it to WebAssembly so it runs in your browser at near-native speed.
  • 100% local processing
Most free PDF tools upload your file to a server, process it, and stream the result back. We don't. Your file lives in your browser tab and never touches our infrastructure. Verifiable in your browser's Network panel.
  • No watermark, no signup, no daily limit
Convert 1 PDF or 1,000. We don't gate on volume because there's nothing to gate on — the engine runs on your machine.
  • Honest about limitations
When something the tool can't do (encrypted PDFs, cross-reference streams), we tell you clearly instead of failing silently. Same for partial results: sampled vs exact, embedded vs not.
  • Open standards, free engines
PDFium is BSD/Apache licensed (free for any use). We don't pay vendor license fees and pass that savings on to you (and to ourselves) as a free, ad-supported tool with no upgrade-to-pro pressure.

Frequently asked questions

Does it download the actual file bytes?
Not yet. We list metadata (name, MIME, size) but extracting the streams requires handling FlateDecode and other compression filters — separate work. For now, open the PDF in Acrobat or Preview to save individual attachments.
Why does this matter for compliance?
Embedded files can leak PII, source documents, or working notes. Auditors need to know what's hiding inside. PDF/A validators also care — the spec restricts embedded file types.
What if no attachments exist?
We tell you clearly. Most PDFs don't have any. Common cases that DO: technical reports with embedded datasets, regulatory filings with supporting docs, archive PDFs with source files.
Does it handle nested name trees?
Yes. PDFs with many attachments use a /Kids subtree structure. The parser walks it depth-first and flattens to a single list.
Is anything uploaded?
No. Pure byte-stream parsing in your browser.
