Why people add text to PDFs
Sometimes the PDF is fine but it’s missing a label — a header, a footer, a reference number, a recipient name. Adding text is the most common annotation task that doesn’t fit Watermark or Page Numbers exactly: arbitrary text at an arbitrary position.
Custom headers / footers
Stamp your team name, recipient label, or routing code at the top or bottom of every page without re-exporting the source.
Reference numbers
Add invoice numbers, case IDs, or tracking codes to forms before sending. Same number on every page.
Recipient labels
Personalize a generic PDF with a recipient name (For: Alice) before forwarding. Faster than rebuilding in Word.
Status flags
Add ‘APPROVED 2025-Q4’ or ‘PENDING REVIEW’ labels at a specific position so the status is unmissable.
Copyright / source attribution
Stamp a copyright notice or source URL at the bottom of distributed materials.
Versioning marks
‘v3 - 2026-04-28’ in the corner so the recipient knows which print-out they’re holding when versions diverge.
How Add Text to PDF works
Three steps, no signup, no uploads.
- STEP 1Drop your PDFUp to 100 MB. PDFium renders page 1 at 1.5× as the editor canvas.
- STEP 2Type + click to placeType your text in the panel above the page. Click anywhere on the page to place it. The marker shows where the text will appear; click again to move.
- STEP 3Pick font size + color6–72 pt font size, any hex color via the picker. The marker updates live.
- STEP 4Apply & downloadWe embed Helvetica and call drawText at the same position on every page. Lossless overlay — original page content untouched.
What makes pdfcraft ai different
- Same engine Chrome usesPDFium is Google's PDF engine — the one that powers Chrome's built-in PDF viewer. We compile it to WebAssembly so it runs in your browser at near-native speed.
- 100% local processingMost free PDF tools upload your file to a server, process it, and stream the result back. We don't. Your file lives in your browser tab and never touches our infrastructure. Verifiable in your browser's Network panel.
- No watermark, no signup, no daily limitConvert 1 PDF or 1,000. We don't gate on volume because there's nothing to gate on — the engine runs on your machine.
- Honest about limitationsWhen something the tool can't do (encrypted PDFs, cross-reference streams), we tell you clearly instead of failing silently. Same for partial results: sampled vs exact, embedded vs not.
- Open standards, free enginesPDFium is BSD/Apache licensed (free for any use). We don't pay vendor license fees and pass that savings on to you (and to ourselves) as a free, ad-supported tool with no upgrade-to-pro pressure.
Frequently asked questions
Can I add multiple text boxes per page?
Not in v1 — one position, one text label, applied to every page (header / footer use case). Multi-text-box support is a v2 enhancement.
Does the text appear on every page or just page 1?
Every page. Same text + position. If you want different text per page, run the tool multiple times with the source PDF you got back from the previous run.
What fonts are supported?
Helvetica only (the standard PDF font, no embedding required). Custom fonts are a future extension.
Will the text overlap with existing content?
It draws on top of whatever’s on the page. If you click in a spot that already has content, the text overlaps. Use a margin position or a fresh region of the page.
Does this support non-Latin scripts?
Helvetica covers Latin + Western European characters. CJK scripts (Chinese, Japanese, Korean) need different fonts; not supported in v1.
Is anything uploaded?
No. PDFium renders the preview locally; pdf-lib applies the text locally. The PDF never leaves your browser.
Want a watermark instead?
Watermark PDF stamps DRAFT / CONFIDENTIAL-style overlays at standard positions with rotation and opacity. Different tool for diagonal-watermark use cases.
