How to prepare a PDF for a Kindle or e-reader

Crop the margins and slim the file so a PDF is actually readable on a small e-ink screen.

For: Readers loading PDFs onto a Kindle, Kobo, reMarkable, or tablet
STEP BY STEP

The workflow

1
Crop the page margins
The biggest e-reader win: Crop the wide white margins so the actual text fills the small screen instead of shrinking to fit page-plus-margins.

2
Convert to grayscale (optional)
E-ink screens are greyscale anyway. Converting drops colour data the device can't show and makes rendering predictable.
Open PDF to Grayscale
3
Compress to fit the device
Run Compress so the file transfers quickly over USB or email-to-device and doesn't eat storage on a small reader.

WHY IT MATTERS

The case for doing this

A PDF is a fixed-layout format designed for paper, which is exactly why it's painful on a small e-ink screen: the reader shrinks the whole page — generous margins included — until the text is too small to read, and you end up pinching and panning. Cropping the margins is the single change that makes the biggest difference, because it lets the device enlarge just the text column. Grayscale matches what e-ink can actually display, and Compress keeps the file small enough to move onto the device comfortably. One honest limit: this makes a PDF *more readable* on an e-reader, but a PDF still won't reflow text the way a native EPUB does — for true reflow you'd convert to EPUB. Everything runs in your browser, so your library stays on your device.

COMMON MISTAKES

What to avoid

Cropping into the text
Trim the margins, not the content. Leave a small buffer so descenders and edge characters aren't clipped on every page.
Expecting reflowable text
A PDF stays fixed-layout even after cropping. If you want text that reflows to the screen size, convert to EPUB instead.
TIPS FOR THE BEST RESULTS

What works

Crop once, apply to all pages
If every page shares the same margin, set the crop box once and apply it across the document for a consistent reading width.
Grayscale only if your reader is e-ink
On a colour tablet, skip grayscale; on a Kindle or Kobo it just matches what the screen shows anyway.
FAQ

Questions about this workflow

E-readers scale the whole page to fit; wide margins waste that space and shrink the text. Cropping lets the device enlarge just the text column.
