For: Anyone printing a program, zine, manual, menu, or order of service to fold
STEP BY STEP

The workflow

1
Add page numbers first (optional)
If the booklet needs numbers, add them now — before imposition — so each logical page carries the right number.
Open Add Page Numbers
2
Impose the pages into booklet order
Booklet reorders and pairs the pages two-up so that when the printed sheets are folded and stacked, they read 1, 2, 3 in sequence.

3
Compress before the print run
Trim the file so it spools quickly at a shared or shop printer — handy when you're running multiple copies.

WHY IT MATTERS

The case for doing this

Folding a stack of paper into a booklet only works if the pages are arranged in the right imposition: page 1 has to share a sheet with the last page, page 2 with the second-to-last, and so on, so that folding the stack produces a correct reading order. Working that out by hand is fiddly and easy to get wrong — one transposed sheet and the whole booklet is scrambled. Booklet does the imposition for you, pairing and ordering the pages two-up for fold-and-staple printing. Add page numbers before imposing so they land on the logical pages, and compress for a fast print run. To print it: use your printer's double-sided setting with short-edge binding, then fold and staple along the spine. Everything runs in your browser, so the document stays on your device.

COMMON MISTAKES

What to avoid

Numbering after imposition
Add page numbers BEFORE Booklet. Number after imposition and the digits land on the physical sheet positions, not the logical pages.
Wrong duplex setting
Booklets need double-sided printing flipped on the SHORT edge. Long-edge flip prints the back pages upside down relative to the fold.
TIPS FOR THE BEST RESULTS

What works

Page count in multiples of 4
Each folded sheet holds four pages, so booklets work cleanly in multiples of four. Add a blank page or two to round up if needed.
Print one test copy first
Run a single copy and fold it before committing to the full run — it's the fastest way to catch a duplex or order surprise.
