Why people convert markdown to PDF

Markdown is the universal authoring format for technical writing — from README files to engineering specs to academic notes. PDF is the universal sharing format. Markdown to PDF closes the gap with proper typography for headings, lists, code, and quotes.

Documentation handouts
Convert your project README into a printable PDF for onboarding kits, partner sharing, or offline reference. Headings render at proper hierarchy, code blocks keep monospaced formatting.
Technical specs & RFCs
Engineering teams write specs in markdown for diff-friendly version control. Convert the final draft to PDF for sign-off, archival, or distribution to non-technical stakeholders.
Notes & meeting minutes
Notes apps (Obsidian, Bear, Logseq, plain editors) export markdown. Convert your meeting notes to PDF for distribution without forcing recipients to install a markdown viewer.
Academic & research drafts
Researchers using Pandoc-style workflows often draft in markdown then convert. Get a quick PDF for sharing with co-authors or printing a draft to read on paper.
AI-generated content
ChatGPT / Claude / Gemini outputs are typically markdown. Pipe the output through this tool to get a clean PDF artifact instead of leaving content trapped in chat history.

How Markdown to PDF works

Three steps, no signup, no uploads.

  1. STEP 1
    Paste or drop a file
Type / paste into the textarea, or drop a .md / .markdown / .txt file (up to 5 MB). All processing stays in your browser.
  2. STEP 2
Pick paper size & body size
Letter or A4. Body size 9–14pt. Headings auto-scale relative to the body size. Times Roman for prose, Courier for code blocks.
  3. STEP 3
    Build & download
Block-level parser handles headings, paragraphs, lists, code blocks, blockquotes, horizontal rules. Inline parser handles **bold**, *italic*, `code`, and [links](url). Output is text-selectable + searchable.

What makes pdfcraft ai different

  • Same engine Chrome uses
PDFium is Google's PDF engine — the one that powers Chrome's built-in PDF viewer. We compile it to WebAssembly so it runs in your browser at near-native speed.
  • 100% local processing
Most free PDF tools upload your file to a server, process it, and stream the result back. We don't. Your file lives in your browser tab and never touches our infrastructure. Verifiable in your browser's Network panel.
  • No watermark, no signup, no daily limit
Convert 1 PDF or 1,000. We don't gate on volume because there's nothing to gate on — the engine runs on your machine.
  • Honest about limitations
When something the tool can't do (encrypted PDFs, cross-reference streams), we tell you clearly instead of failing silently. Same for partial results: sampled vs exact, embedded vs not.
  • Open standards, free engines
PDFium is BSD/Apache licensed (free for any use). We don't pay vendor license fees and pass that savings on to you (and to ourselves) as a free, ad-supported tool with no upgrade-to-pro pressure.

Frequently asked questions

Which markdown features are supported?
Headings (H1–H6 via #..######), paragraphs, ordered + unordered lists, fenced code blocks (```), inline code, blockquotes (>), horizontal rules, **bold**, *italic*, `code`, and [links](url). Tables, footnotes, nested lists, and HTML passthrough are NOT supported — use a markdown-to-HTML converter first if you need those.
Is the output PDF searchable?
Yes. Unlike rasterized PDFs, this tool writes real glyph runs — your output is fully searchable, copyable, and screen-reader accessible. Verify by Ctrl+F inside any PDF viewer.
Why don't [text](url) links work as clickable links in the PDF?
Markdown link text renders in italic to hint at the link visually, but the URL isn't embedded as a clickable PDF annotation. Adding clickable links would require a separate PDF annotation pass — a future enhancement. For now, link destinations are visible to readers via the rendered text content. Tip: include the URL inline like `Read more at https://example.com`.
How are headings sized?
Relative to body size: H1 is 2.0×, H2 is 1.6×, H3 is 1.3×, H4 is 1.15×, H5 is 1.05×, H6 is 1.0× (same as body but bold). At 11pt body, H1 renders as 22pt. Auto-scales when you change body size.
What's the page-break behavior?
Block-level — the layout engine measures each block (heading, paragraph, code, etc.) and advances to a new page if the block doesn't fit on the current one. Long blocks (huge code listings) break mid-block on the line nearest the page bottom; we don't currently keep blocks together (would require multi-pass layout).
Is anything uploaded?
No. Markdown parsing and PDF generation both run in your browser via pdf-lib. Verifiable in DevTools → Network.

Need plain text instead?

Text to PDF skips the markdown parser and renders your input as literal text — useful for code listings, logs, or tabular data where formatting characters should appear as-is.
