Why people draw freehand on PDFs

Sometimes a comment, a circle around a typo, or a quick arrow says more than highlights or text boxes can. Freehand drawing is the closest digital equivalent to marking up a printout with a pen.

Casual review markup
Circle a typo, underline a passage, sketch an arrow to the reviewer’s comment. Faster than rectangles and text boxes for ad-hoc notes.
Hand-written annotations
Add quick ‘yes / no / maybe’ marks next to choices on a printable form.
Math + diagram notes
Sketch a missing equation step or an arrow connecting two parts of a diagram during study or peer review.
Quick redlines
Strike through a sentence with a freehand line for a redline that takes one second instead of typing replacement text.
Floor-plan / map markup
Circle a feature on an architectural drawing or map without breaking out a CAD tool.
Initialing approvals
Quick initials on a printable form when a full Sign PDF feels heavy.

How Free Draw works

Three steps, no signup, no uploads.

  1. STEP 1
    Drop your PDF
Up to 100 MB. PDFium renders page 1 at 1.5× as the editor canvas.
  2. STEP 2
    Pick color + width
Four preset colors (black, blue, red, green) plus a custom-color picker. Width slider 1–20 px.
  3. STEP 3
    Draw with the pen tool
Click and drag to draw a stroke. Lift to start a new one. Live preview as you draw. Undo removes the last stroke; Clear all wipes the canvas.
  4. STEP 4
    Apply & download
We convert each stroke from screen pixels to PDF user-space points, then drawLine through every consecutive pair via pdf-lib with rounded line caps. Lossless overlay — original page content untouched.

What makes pdfcraft ai different

  • Same engine Chrome uses
PDFium is Google's PDF engine — the one that powers Chrome's built-in PDF viewer. We compile it to WebAssembly so it runs in your browser at near-native speed.
  • 100% local processing
Most free PDF tools upload your file to a server, process it, and stream the result back. We don't. Your file lives in your browser tab and never touches our infrastructure. Verifiable in your browser's Network panel.
  • No watermark, no signup, no daily limit
Convert 1 PDF or 1,000. We don't gate on volume because there's nothing to gate on — the engine runs on your machine.
  • Honest about limitations
When something the tool can't do (encrypted PDFs, cross-reference streams), we tell you clearly instead of failing silently. Same for partial results: sampled vs exact, embedded vs not.
  • Open standards, free engines
PDFium is BSD/Apache licensed (free for any use). We don't pay vendor license fees and pass that savings on to you (and to ourselves) as a free, ad-supported tool with no upgrade-to-pro pressure.

Frequently asked questions

Why are my drawn lines a bit jagged?
v1 connects stroke points with straight line segments — no spline smoothing. Short strokes look fine; long, fast strokes show the underlying polyline. Smoothing (quadratic-bezier curves through midpoints of consecutive segments) is a v2 enhancement.
Can I draw on every page?
v1 = page 1 only. Multi-page drawing needs page navigation in the editor — v2 enhancement once 2-3 visual editors validate the pattern.
Will my drawing print?
Yes. The strokes are part of the page content stream after applying. Acrobat, Apple Preview, and every printer we’ve tested respect them correctly.
Can I edit a stroke after drawing it?
No — once it’s on the canvas, you can only Undo (last stroke) or Clear all. Per-stroke editing (move, color change, delete) is a v2 enhancement.
Does the tool support a stylus / Apple Pencil?
Yes. We use the Pointer Events API which receives stylus input the same as mouse input. Pressure-sensitivity isn’t implemented in v1 — every stroke uses the slider width uniformly.
Why do I see a tiny dot when I just click?
Stray clicks (less than 2 points) are dropped on pointer-up so they don’t accumulate as invisible artifacts. If you need a dot, drag a tiny distance.
Is anything uploaded?
No. PDFium renders the preview locally; pdf-lib applies the strokes locally. Your PDF and your drawing both stay in your browser.

Need straight rectangles instead?

Highlight PDF gives you drag-to-draw colored rectangles. Better for highlighting passages than pen strokes.
